David Steele RIP

David Steele 1

Last weekend, Portmarnock Triathlon Club and the wider triathlon community lost David Steele in a cycling accident while he was training with friends in north county Dublin.

David was a member of Portmarnock Triathlon Club for the past three years and during that time had become a popular and enthusiastic member of the club.

Portmarnock TC chairperson Paul Byrne paid this tribute to his friend:

"David (Chas) joined Portmarnock in March 2017 and took to the sport like a duck to water. He enjoyed every minute of training and racing. He encouraged everyone one from beginners to ironman."
"He completed his first 70.3 in Dublin in 2017 under the five and a half hour mark with his focus for 2018 firmly set on completing a full ironman.  In 2018 David competed in many triathlons as ironman training and even came over the finish line in the washout that was TriTyrone, a true testament to his grit and determination. He completed his first full IRONMAN in Barcelona that year also smashing his sub 11hr goal something he was really proud of."
"Every time someone new started in the club after him David would make it his business to welcome them into the club and ensure they settled in and would send them little messages of encouragement. The last few years have been special for us all and he will be a great loss to our club and the triathlon community as a whole."
Triathlon Ireland extends its condolences to David's friends, his clubmates and his family - especially his wife Karen.
