The Year in Review: Aquabike National Champs Aquabike National ChampsIt was way back in May that national championship medals in the still relatively new discipline of aquabike went up for grabs. While the swim-bike format has been popular with athletes nursing run injuries, a top-class the line up for the 2019 national champs - hosted by Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon - provided evidence of a discipline maturing quickly.A 1,900 metre swim in the still 'warming up' waters of Lough Cutra followed by 96 kilometre bike on a hilly, windy course ensured that whoever won on the day would have earned their national title.Tierney and Flanagan Earn goldCillian Tierney (Tralee TC) and Joanne Flanagan (GoTri) were crowned national champions at the conclusion of an exciting race.Tierney revealed afterwards that he had only entered the race 'on a whim', not that anyone could have known from his assured performance. Tierney led from the opening metres of the swim and clocked an eventual 3hrs 02mins 15secs to win ahead of Ruaidhri Geraghty in 2nd and Marcin Mizgajski in 3rd.In the women's race, Joanne Flanagan had a colossal three-hour-plus battle with Pirahna's TC's Claire Gorman. All morning long, the pair traded the lead in an exciting battle that ended with Flanagan edging the win by a matter of seconds. Former champion Siobhan Forman came home in third and like all the podium athletes will get the chance to pick up her medal at the Triathlon Ireland annual awards later this month.AWARDS Heading for a Sell OutWith just three weeks to go, tickets for this year's awards are selling out quickly!on't delay - get your ticket for the Triathlon Ireland Annual Awards Night here!
