Hayes heads to Durban ATU Premium African Cup

Carolyn Hayes is in action again this weekend continuing her, to date, successful search for invaluable points in the run-up to Tokyo 2020 qualification. This weekend's action takes her to Durban, South Africa on Sunday 24th.

Since December, Hayes has taken to the start line in five continental cup races across Asia and Africa, four of which yielded a top five finish including a 3rd place and two wins. This has seen Hayes rocket up the ITU Rankings from 396th to 145th.

Carolyn's last day out saw her battle a gruelling hilly course, made formidable by a combination of heat and altitude clocking in at 22degrees celsius and 2200m respectively but a strong performance which will stand to her this weekend.

The Course

Durban promises to be a fast and furious race with a bike course hardly breaking 20m of climbing between its highest and lowest points and an out-and-back, three lap run course with a similar profile of small rises.

These slight drags are unlikely to hinder Hayes over the run, her strongest discipline which has hurt the rest of the field on many occasions. Hayes is ranked 2nd coming into the race with South Africa's Jodie Berry taking the favourite spot. The pair having faced off twice in recent months and Hayes has got the better of Berry on both occasions.

There is no live stream of the race but Triathlon Ireland will be letting you know how Carolyn fairs over our social media channels.
