McConnell, Gallagher and Walsh Top 20 in Portugal

Ireland's High Performance development athletes Erin McConnell, Maeve Gallagher and Orla Walsh put in superb performances over the weekend to all finish in the top 20 of the Quarteria ETU Junior European Cup in Portugal.

McConnell was the best of the bunch - finishing in 13th place after emerging from very rough seas with the third quickest swim of the race. She was part of a leading bike pack that was pursued by another larger pack including Orla Walsh; with Maeve Gallagher finishing strong on the run to move up more than a dozen places.

In the end McConnell claimed a fantastic 13th place with Gallagher in 16th 38secs back. Right behind her was Walsh in 17th position just nine seconds behind. All three athletes improved their starting positions by a healthy margin and will have learned much from the experience of racing a Junior European Cup.

Dunne Best of the Senior Men

On Saturday the senior men's race saw Chris Mintern, Darren Dunne and Brian Glynn face a very strong field and extremely tough swim conditions in the Portugese seaside town.

Darren Dunne made a big improvement from his last race in Gran Canaria a week before and was in the second bike chase pack. Dunne was also fastest of the entire race in T2 and ran hard to claim a promising 30th place.

Chris Mintern was on his way to a top 20 finish until the first kilometre of the run but had to ease off the pace due to injury and finished in 46th place. Two minutes behind him in 50th came Brian Glynn who biked and ran hard to make up a large deficit he suffered during the swim.
