Race Report: Galco Naas Duathlon & Intervarsity National Championships 2018

The day dawned bright and cold for the second round of the Galco Naas Duathlon Series which took place on Sunday, 25 February. This race also held the Intervarsity National Duathlon Championships 2018. Athletes represented their college to be crowned national champion. Although cold, conditions were otherwise optimal for racing.

Naas Duathlon2 Start

In the men's race, Con Doherty, Niall Cornyn and Conor Tiernan had matching times over the first run a time of 10.01. Doherty led from T1 after a quick transition with Aichlinn O'Reilly pulling back some time to have one of the quickest bike splits of the day entering T2. Doherty and Cornyn held first and second on the run, finishing in times of 52:13 and 52:59 respectively. O'Reilly finished in third in a time of 53:25.

Women's race

Barbara Dunne came home the winner after a strong victory in the Women's race. Ciara Wilson led the race after run one with the fastest split over the first section, however, a quicker bike and second run saw Dunne claim victory in a time of 1:01:55. Ciara Wilson finished in second place in with 01:02:17 and Christine Russell in third with a time of 01:03:23.

Intervarsity Duathlon national championship

The result of the men's race meant that the Intervarsity National Duathlon Championships podium matched that of the National Series race. The University of Limerick (UL) was well represented with both Con Doherty and Aichlinn O'Reilly representing the college. Second place in the championship race went to Niall Cornyn of Dublin City University (DCU).

DCU had two places on the podium in the women's race. Ciara Wilson of DCU finished first in the Intervarsity Championship with Christine Russell (NUI Galway) in second.. Orlaith Fogarty from Dublin City University rounded out the Intervarsity champs finishing in third.
