Con Doherty Wins Silver in Sweden

Con Doherty has won silver for Ireland at the Malmo European Cup event in Sweden.

The 23 year old finished just eight seconds behind Great Britain’s Morgan Davies, with another British athlete Calum Johnson making up the podium.

The result equals Doherty’s best ever in a European Cup and follows on from his fourth place at the European Sprint Distance Championships in Estonia and victory at the Larache African Cup in Morocco last month.

The multiple Irish championship holder is now Ireland’s top ranked athlete as the qualification period for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games hots up.

A Mad Chase

Speaking after the race, Doherty said he as delighted with his second place - which repeats his performance in the same race last year.

“I am really happy, I got a bit of a gap at T2, and was in the lead but when he (eventual winner Morgan Davies) came past. I picked it up as much as I could but he was at a different tempo to me so I did as well as I could.”

Doherty had been forced to chase in the early stages of the race, after finding himself in the second group on the bike.

He said: “It was a mad chase, I don’t know if I had a bad swim but there were five of us strong bikers and we got the whole way up to the front group. Then it was about being in the right position.”

Team Ireland Performs

Apart from Doherty, Malmo saw some superb results for Team Ireland which had a record number of six athletes in the men’s senior race. Russell White was the next best athlete, finishing in 10th place while Kieran Jackson recorded his best ever intentional result to finish 15th.

Teenager Cillian Tierney finished 43rd in his first senior international race while Darren Dunne came home in 50th, once place ahead of Chris Mintern. Mintern had been in the top 15 in the early stages of the bike until he crashed and spent the rest of his race chasing for places.

Russell White and Darren Dunne will now join up with Ben Shaw for the European Championships in Glasgow next weekend to race the men’s senior race. Two of this trio will also line out in the exciting Mixed Relay event alongside Orla Walsh and Laura Wylie.
