Weekend Racing Preview March 5th-6th

West Clare Duathlon

With March living up to its reputation of 'entering like a lion', this weekend's duathlons are set to test the mettle of competitors. No fewer than four TI sanctioned races are being run this weekend, three of which carry points which count towards the National Duathlon Series.


In Co. Mayo the Ashford sprint duathlon takes place in the picturesque village of Cong and takes competitors through the grounds of the stunning Ashford Castle, Cong Woods and along the Lough Corrib.

The Puck Warriors sprint duathlon in Killorglin, Co. Kerry will boast equally spectacular scenery, while at the other end of the country, Letterkenny 247 Triathlon club is hosting both a sprint and olympic distance duathlon on Sunday from the Aura Leisure Complex.

Finally, the Banner sprint duathlon, hosted by GoTri takes place in Shannon Town, Co Clare and will include a junior race with under 7's running 250m (twice) and cycling 2.2km, distances that increase with age up to the under 15's who will run 1.9km (& 1.3km) and cycle 8.8km.

In international racing, elite triathlete Bryan Keane will get his season started on Saturday in the ITU Abu Dhabi World Series race. The first major race of the season sees Keane line up in a world class field, with Mario Mola (ranked 2nd on the world), Richard Murray (ranked 4th) and Fernando Alarza (ranked 5th) all on the start list for the Olympic distance race.

Keane will he aiming for a solid performance that will earn him Olympic qualification points and help secure his place on the plane to Rio 2016.
