Harry Speers and Carolyn Hayes raced through a choppy swim and a challenging cross country run to win the National Aquathlon Championships at Castlewellan Forest Park in the shadow of the Mourne Mountains.

The event, which was staged by Belfast's Olympian Triathlon Club also featured junior and kids races, where the stars of tomorrow battled it out over shorter distances.

Speers Wins Men's Race

In the men's race, Brian Harris from Wicklow Triathlon Club took an early advantage, coming out of the water in 1st place with a time of 11mins 16secs - a full 48secs clear of Harry Speers in 2nd and 18-year-old Odhran McKane in 3rd on a time of 12mins 58secs. Speers clawed back 8secs in T1 but with Harris managing 18mins 33secs on the 5km cross country course, the race was a close run affair with Speers winning out by just 17secs thanks to his 17min 35sec run split.

Harris managed to hold on to second place by just two seconds from fast finishing McKane who had to content himself with the National Championships bronze medal position.

Hayes Makes it Three in a Row

In the women's race, Carolyn Hayes retained her National Aquathlon title for the third year running and added yet another championship to her long list of domestic achievements. Hayes was the first woman (and third athlete overall) out of the water but had company with Triathlon Ireland development athlete Emma Sharkey following just four seconds back. Hayes pulled away on the run  and crossed the line 33secs ahead of Heather Foley, who outran all but five men and women in the race to move from seventh to second during the 5km run.

Junior Development athlete Orla Walsh confirmed that she's one to watch for the future by finishing in 3rd place on a time of 33mins 28 seconds.
