Dunne and Hayes Win Vodafone National Series Opener

Darren Dunne and Carolyn Hayes took the honours on the opening weekend of the 2016 Vodafone National Series at the North Tipp Sprint distance triathlon in Nenagh.

More than 250 competitors lined out for the pool triathlon, organised by Nenagh Tri Club and raced in bright spring sunshine.

Men's Race

Junior High Performance athlete, Dunne won against a highly competitive field in the men's race, finishing ahead of Aichlinn O'Reilly (2nd) and teenager Cillian Tierney (3rd). As well as being the first race of the 2016 Vodafone National Series, Saturday's event served as the Intervarsity National Championship, something reflected in the results with four out of the top five men aged 24 and under.

Women's Race

In the women's race, Carolyn Hayes came home with a comfortable victory, adding Intervarsity Champion to her long list of national titles.   

Fellow medicine student Marie Boland took second place with a solid all round performance while Lisa Horgan battled impressively to claim 3rd by 15secs.

In all, more than 250 competitors took part in the event organised by Nenagh Tri Club.

Joey Hannan Memorial Race

The following day In Limerick, husband and wife team Kevin Keane and Derval Devaney won the 23rd edition of the Joey Hannan Memorial Triathlon.

The race, organised by Limerick Triathlon Club saw more than 400 athletes take part in Tri-aTri, Sprint and Olympic distance pool triathlons on the University of Limerick campus.

Peter Kern and local athlete David Richardson claimed 2nd and 3rd place in the men's olympic distance event while in the women's race Celia Davin finished a close 2nd, ahead of Annemarie Power. In all just 1min 6secs separated 1st from 3rd in a hard fought women's race.

In the sprint distance event, TI High Performance development athlete Con Doherty claimed a comfortable victory with an impressive finishing time of 57mins 03secs. Alan O'Brien and Gerard Bowen came home 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Less than 24 hours after she won at North Tipp, Carolyn Hayes made it two victories in two days as she broke clear of Kirsten Huysamen on the bike leg to win the women's sprint distance race by 1min 36secs.

Huysamen from Limerick Tri Club performed impressively, swimming the 3rd quickest time of the day behind Doherty and Hayes and finishing in 6th place out of all male and female competitors. Third place in the women's sprint distance event went to Joanne Flanagan.
