Duathlon Season kicks off at The Butchers Block Naas Duathlon at Punchestown

The first race on the 2016 Triathlon Ireland race calendar kicked off on Sunday when Naas Triathlon club hosted their first Duathlon race at Punchestown racecourse. 198 competitors braved the chilly January weather to participate in the National Series event, the first of a 3 race series hosted by Naas Triathlon club sponsored by The Butchers Block.

Only seconds separated the first 3 men into transition from the 3.5km run with Mariusz Olejniczak and Eamonn Staunton neck and neck as they headed off on the 20km Bike course followed closely by Sean Mc Loughlin. Staunton took the lead on the bike and was first through transition and out onto the final run. He kept up the pressure posting the fastest run split on second run to take the win in 54:58. Mariusz Olejniczak representing the host club of Naas Triathlon came in second place with Sean Mc Loughlin third.  Olejniczak is well into his preparation for The Race, a 24 hour endurance event of kayaking, mountain running and cycling across the rugged landscape of Donegal in March.

In the women’s race, Heather Foleys win was never in doubt as she had the fastest splits across all 3 legs of the race to take first prize in 1:00:08. Second place went to Siobhan Murtagh and Lisa Dalton was third.

As this was a National Series event, prizes were awarded across the age categories with even a winner in the 65 year + showing that this race series appeals to both young and old, from elite to complete beginners trying their hand at triathlon for the very first time.

TI photographer Martin Jancek was on hand to capture the event - photos available here.

The next 2 races in this race series are on February 21st and March 27th with slots still available. You can register at http://naastriclub.com/
