Talent Identification

 "If there are young guys or girls out there in Ireland who are thinking about going to the Olympics, I'll tell them to embrace it and give up everything and pursue it relentlessly"

The Triathlon Ireland Talent Identification programme has the goal of finding talented athletes and helping them develop to their full potential in the sport of triathlon.

This programme is about high performance sport and developing highly talented athletes who have the potential to compete at Olympic level and achieve medal success at world level.

We are looking for athletes who fit the following profiles:

  • A strong swimming background and some running experience (school cross country, community games participation, athletics club);
  • Hold a desire to represent Ireland in one of the fastest growing and most exciting Olympic sports;
  • A desire to work up to a standard to compete at Olympic level.

The talent transfer programme helps identify potential athletes who have a proven background of training and competing at national and international level in their sport. Triathlon Ireland’s aim is to transfer the skills they have in their chosen sport to triathlon.

To register your interest in the talent transfer programme please contact stephen@triathlonireland.com

The standards required to be competitive at international level continue to rise and our testing will be refined and selection criteria adjusted upwards on a regular basis to reflect this. Athletes will undertake a number of tests which will be used to assess their potential for draft legal triathlon.

Typical entry level age 16

  • Swim 15 lengths of 25m pool in minutes for Male, 14 lengths for Female, with no tumble turns.
  • Run 1850m in 6minutes for Male, 1550m for Female, following minutes maximal cycle.

The Triathlon Ireland Super Series provides athletes with a pathway to international selection. Junior and U23 development athletes are expected to be at the forefront of these races if they wish to be selected for international events.

Selected athletes will be invited to attend training days and camps appropriate to their level. Camps are designed to give athletes an insight into the training and lifestyle necessary to compete as a professional athlete while building upon the work they are doing with their coaches and clubs. There will be a subsidy charged for the training camps and for competitions entered.

Triathlon Ireland will encourage communication with athletes coaches to help athletes develop to their full potential. Athletes will be offered the opportunity to race internationally at an appropriate level for their development and age when ready.

This programme has been running for several years now and has already seen a number of juniors competing successfully and achieving podium results at world level. Some have graduated to competing at U23 and Senior level at European, World Cup and World Triathlon Series events.

The junior squad is being capably led by TI's accredited Talent Coaches, under the guidance of Triathlon Ireland Performance Director Stephen Delaney. (stephen@triathlonireland.com)
