The BMW Triathlon National Series employs a “30th percentile” points system with male and female Triathlon Ireland members ranked separately. The triathlete who is at the 30th percentile of all TI members that finish a race (say 60th out of 200) will be allocated 100 points. The scores for all other times are calculated by reference to the 30th percentile.

Note: The Triathlon Ireland Member rule means that ‘One Day Membership’ holders and triathletes who are members of a foreign triathlon association are excluded from the calculations.

To calculate the points for the male in 10th position:

Time for 10th male:   1:05:00 = 65.00 minutes

Time for 60th male:   1.16:00 (30th percentile of eligible athletes) = 76.00minutes

Number of points for 60th male (30th percentile of eligible athletes) :      100

Number of points for 10th male:

= 30th Percentile Male Minutes * 100 / Minutes of the 10th Male

= 76*100/65

= 7600/65

= 116.923

To calculate the points for the female in 50th position:

Time for 15th female:                      1:14:00 = (30th Percentile of eligible athletes(200) = 74.00

Time for 50th female:                      1.32:00 = 92.00minutes

Number of points for 15th female:  100.00

Number of points for 50th female:

= 30th Percentile FEMALE * 100 / 50TH FEMALE>

= 74*100/92

= 7400/92

= 80.43 Points
