With an ever increasing number of clubs looking to facilitate Junior Members below is some information related to child protection and safeguarding of children.

VETTING

Why?

A crucial function in providing fun safe and fair opportunities for all to participate in triathlon is ensuring the safeguarding of children participating in the sport. In order to achieve this, Triathlon Ireland has set a number of operating procedures and policies to guide it's staff, affiliated clubs, coaches, volunteers and officials when they are in contact with young people.

REFERENCES

Why?

To ensure the suitability of each candidate to work with junior athletes (-18yrs), TI requests the New Leader Information Form 8 is completed and signed. This requests

contact information, your TI membership number  and references x2 (ideally someone who knows you 2+ years in junior environment)

i)Complete New Leader Information Form 8

 

ii) Ask TI staff member or TI qualified Club Children’s Officer to check and verify current passport ID and sign off on the Form 8.

Wait?

TI National children’s officer will request the two references (see Recruitment Reference Form 9 for referees only) and report back to the Club Children’s officer with the list of qualified individuals when confirmed.

CHILD PROTECTION COURSES

Basic Awareness

Why?

2 hours basic course - leave with knowledge of basic awareness and certification of Child Protection

Who?

Child Protection Courses are run by Irish Sports Council trained tutors but through the Local Sports Partnerships (LSP).

Children's Officer

Why?

There is further responsibility for Club CO’s –

This course is a whole day course which is not run as often as Basic Awareness course, so please check with your LSP.

TRIATHLON IRELAND SAFEGUARDING CODE

What?

Triathlon Ireland (TI) recommends that all adults in contact with young people in triathlon are familiar with the Triathlon Ireland Safeguarding Code for Young People


Triathlon Ireland Safeguarding Code for Young People (Revised Nov 2011)

Who?

All leaders working with junior athletes will be required to sign the New Leader Information Form 8 to confirm having read and understood the TI Safeguarding Code.

When?

The Existing Leader Declaration Form 10 must be signed thereafter on a yearly basis.
This can be done at Club level and given to the Children’s Officer in each club.


A register of qualified junior leaders must be sent to TI annually with club affiliation.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP

Who?

Members who are 19 years and under on the 31st Dec of the membership year are eligible for Junior Membership

What?

Junior Members must apply for junior membership application online.

Triathlon Ireland Membership

Finally?

Upon receipt at the TI office of all the necessary documentation, as outlined in the online Junior membership application, the Junior member’s card will be posted out.

 

As with all our members – Junior athletes are not insured by TI until they have received their membership card which must be produced at all race registrations.

JUNIOR ATHLETES IN CLUBS

Who?

Children’s Officer (CO) in Clubs must keep a list of junior members and their contact / emergency information. This is Private and Confidential information and should only be seen on a need to know basis; ie CO’s and the junior coach leading the session.

 

What?

Parental Athlete Consent Form 11 – both the parent/guardians and the junior athlete need to complete and sign.

 

This asks for personal

  3. Consent regarding TI Safeguarding Code/
  4. Junior Coaches
  5.  Photography and Media
  6. Drug Testing
  7. Medical issues at events
What else?

Absent Parental Consent Form 11a

 

If a parent/guardian is unable to attend with their Junior Athlete to an event / training / club meeting then it is recommended that this form is completed by the parent and giving to the Junior Coach in advance of the event stating permission for the person standing in for responsibility for their junior athlete.

If Away?

Travel Permission Form 14

Permission for Junior Athletes going to events with Club Junior Coaches or Junior Leaders.
