Insurance Info

This section of the website is to convey information about various Insurance issues.

All members are covered in training (in organised club sessions) by the Triathlon Ireland public liability insurance. Racing members (full, student, and junior) are covered for racing. Please note that associate members are not covered for racing, and have to pay a one-day license fee.

All Triathlon Ireland members who make any insurance claims are liable to pay the excess applicable to the claim being made. The excess is currently €500 and this must be paid by the member before the claim is submitted to the insurers.  For full details of the Terms & Conditions, please send an email to administrator@triathlonireland.com

Please note that the TI membership insurance is third party only, the details of which are set out below.  Click here to download a summary of our insurance policy.  We recommend that members take out additional personal accident/medical insurance.

In the event of Death or Permanent Total Disablement

The Triathlon Ireland policy automatically includes Personal Accident insurance for registered members for an amount up to 25,000 Euro in the event of death or permanent total disablement following an accident and/or injury during training and/or participation in a TI sanctioned event within Ireland or the UK. Training is deemed to be official organised training only and travelling is only covered whilst as a member of an organised party travelling under the direction of TI and specifically excludes travel by motorcycle.

Who is Covered by TI Insurance?

All TI members are covered by our third party insurance at all club training sessions (see below for what constitutes an official club training session), regardless of the type of TI membership they hold.

If a member holds Full, Junior or Student membership, they are also covered by our third party insurance at any TI sanctioned race.

Associate TI Members and non Members are not covered for insurance at any TI sanctioned race and therefore must purchase a One Day Licence (ODL).  An ODL will give them third party insurance for the one race for which the ODL has been purchased for.

What exactly is covered by the third party insurance?

Cover during official club training sessions and during any TI Sanctioned Race:

Cover during official club training sessions and during a TI sanctioned race, is as per the standard Triathlon Ireland cover and includes Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Personal Accident Insurance. (Click here to download a summary of our insurance policy.)

Public Liability insurance covers members who are found to be negligent in their duty to participants and spectators of sports and as a result cause personal or property damage.

Today it is recognised that the term "professional" can be applied to many participants who exist beyond the traditional professions. Increased social awareness of an individual's rights and the remedy they might seek has created an era of litigation previously unseen, where anybody providing a service or advice may one day face a claim.

Sportscover's Professional Indemnity policy can provide coverage for club or association coaches and officials who may find themselves in this situation.

What constitutes a club training session?

Training is deemed to be official organised training only. A record should be kept by individual clubs of their organised training sessions, should this information be required in the event of a claim.

How should clubs deal with new members who are just trying out a session?

Guests are automatically covered under the liability sections of the policy. A register should be kept of all participating guests.

A guest can only attend a maximum of 3 official club training sessions before they must obtain membership of the club and Triathlon Ireland.  It is the responsibility of the club to monitor these attendance records and ensure that this insurance criteria is met.  Click here to download sign on sheet.

What are the consequences of someone training regularly with a club, but not joining Triathlon Ireland, if a loss event occurs?

No cover operates for that individual whether it is injury to a third party or themselves. They are personally responsible for any losses incurred. Cover only operates for registered members of TI.

The Club is responsible for ensuring that all their club members taking part in official club training sessions, are members of Triathlon Ireland.  If club members are not TI members and an accident occurs, the Club may be held liable as any claim resulting from the accident will not be covered under TI insurance.

Are Club Coaches Covered by TI Insurance?

If a club hires an external coach (not a member of the club or TI), they must ensure that the coach carries a recognised qualification and sufficient insurance to coach the displines for which they have been hired to coach.

If the coach is a TI Level 1 or Level 2 qualified coach, they must carry current and valid membership of Full, Student or Junior membership of Triathlon Ireland to be covered by the TI third party insurance.  It is the responsibility of the club to confirm that the coach holds a valid & current qualification.  To confirm if a coach holds a TI Level 1 or Level 2 qualification, please ask the coach for a copy of their Level 1 or Level 2 certification.

If the club does not have access to an external coach, TI Level 1 or TI Level 2 qualified coach, they may appoint a club member to lead an official training session, provided that person is both a current club member and current TI member (Full, Student or Junior).  This person must also be 18 years old or over.  The club should exercise common sense in appointing somebody to lead a training session and should ensure that they do have experience appropriate to the task.

Are Level 1 & Level 2 Accredited Coaches Covered by TI Insurance?

If you are a Level 1 or Level 2 Triathlon Ireland accredited coach, you are covered by TI insurance if:-

  • You are a Full TI member in the current year of coaching and the person you are coaching is a member of TI (they must be either Full, Associate, Junior or Student member)

and;

  • Coaching is not your main source of income (if coaching is your main source of income, you must ensure that carry your own sufficient insurance)

Is a Club Covered by TI Insurance at Club Training Camps Overseas?

For clubs to be covered by TI insurance at overseas training camps:-

  • All attendees must hold Full, Student, Associate or Junior TI membership.
  • All attendees must hold membership of the TI Affiliated club who have organised the training camp.
  • The club must strongly advise that all attendees hold valid personal travel insurance for the duration of the training camp as failure to do so could leave the club seriously exposed in the event of an accident.
  • The club need to exercise due care in the selection of the venue and training locations in all areas relating to health and safety as you have a duty of care as event organisers.
  • If any attendees are 17 years or under at any time during the camp, a parent or guardian must accompany them during the training camp at this time.
