2016 National Mixed Relay Championships

Triathlon Ireland is delighted to announce an exciting new format of racing with the 2016 National Mixed Relay Championships.

This event will take place immediately after the Lust For Life Ironmind Sprint Distance Triathlon in Belvedere House & Gardens, Mullingar on the afternoon of July 9th 2016 and promises to be a highly competitive, exciting and fun form of racing. The mixed relay championships are being organised and run directly by Triathlon Ireland.

Format

The race format will be run to ITU standards and is identical to the hugely popular elite level team triathlon, with each team made up of four athletes - two male and two female. Each athlete completes a super-sprint distance triathlon (approx 200 meter swim, 6km draft legal bike and 1.5km run) before tagging their team mate.

Starting formats are fixed as follows: 1st Female - 1st Male - 2nd Female - 2nd Male. Each athlete tags his or her teammate inside the ‘Relay Zone’ and the first team to cross the line is the winner.

Up to 50 teams can take part in the race. All teammates must be registered as Triathlon Ireland members with the same club. Clubs may enter more than one team.

Represent Ireland at the European Championships

The winners will be presented with a Triathlon Ireland perpetual trophy and will also qualify, along with the runners-up, to represent Ireland at the ETU European Team Relay Championships in Spain this coming September. In addition to this a small €400 subsidy will be available to each team to help with their expenses.

Lust for Life-Ironminds Triathlon

The mixed relay championships race will take place on the same day and location as the Lust for Life-Ironminds Beginner Triathlon, a festival event in the lush surroundings of Belvedere House and Gardens near Mullingar.

The Ironminds race is organised by mental health advocate, triathlete and musician Niall "Bressie" Breslin, who through his Ironminds television documentary has inspired more than 600 first-time triathletes to challenge themselves in a positive, beginner friendly atmosphere.

Ironminds aims to be more than just a race, with participants encouraged to relax afterwards in a family-friendly atmosphere with DJs, food stalls and other attractions laid on as part of the event. The mixed relay championships will take place on the side-lines of the Ironminds post-race party which should create a lively atmosphere for what will be a fast and furious race.
