Another Successful Year for Tri the Hook Triathlon on the Hook Peninsula

The Hook Peninsula welcomed 200 triathletes participating in the Tri the Hook sprint triathlon this weekend.  Amongst the competitors were Mark McCabe, who represented Ireland in Kona, Hawaii at the 2014 Ironman World Championships and Niall Breslin ‘Bressie’  who competed as part of his filming schedule for  a documentary for RTE 2 entitled ‘Bressie’s Ironmind’.

There was perfect weather for the event; the 750 meter swim took place at beautiful Baginbun beach; the waters were as calm making for a competitive, fast swim.  The 22km technical cycle route was as challenging as always but competitors benefited this year from a smoother surface thanks to the recent road resurfacing completed by Wexford County Council.  The 5.3km run which took in views across Carnivan Bay had a new improved finish location at Fethard Village Amenities at Ashgrove.

The overall male winner Neal O’Grady finished the course in a time of 1 hour, 10 mins & 21 secs with an impressive cycle time of 35 mins 36 seconds; this is Neal’s second win at Tri the Hook, he took first place at the inaugural event 5 years ago.  Overall female winner was taken by Marie Boland in 1 hour, 18 mins & 47 secs.

Competitors complimented this year’s organisation and marshalling of the race, with Triathlon Ireland’s referee applauding the organisers for putting on such a positive inclusive race with a great sense of community at the core.  Tri the Hook was strongly supported by the local community who turned out in high numbers to provide high quality marshalling for the event and also by local groups including; St Mogues GAA, Ashgrove Soccer Club, Hook Sub Aqua and the RNLI.

Event equipment and prizes were supported by a number of local businesses and business people including Version 1, Seanie Colfer Construction Ltd., Hookless Holiday Village, Rosegardland Estate, Kalas Sportswear, Sanibel & Hook Head B&B’s, Roche’s Bar & Restaurant, Neville’s Bar & Restaurant, Kehoe Marine, Wallaces of Wellingtonbridge and Greenstar.  Competitor’s goody were filled by Chia Bia, Goodness Shakes and Dillon’s Londis.

The race is organised by Hook Tourism, Neville’s Bar & Restaurant and Dillon’s Londis and takes place each August in the village of Feathard-on-Sea.
