Mondello Draft Legal Duathlon

Mondello Draft Legal Duathlon

In glorious conditions the second Mondello Park Draft Legal Duathlon took place on Wednesday July 8th at 7:00 p.m.

36 competitors made it to the start line and in the men’s race, run 1 was very close and less than 2 seconds separated Austin Dennis, Cian O’Reilly, Scott Graham and Raymond Lonergan at the end of the sighting 3.3km lap of the international motor racing circuit. Meanwhile in the ladies race Breda Daly in a run time of 13:36 opened up a 25 second lead over Lyndsay O’Neill with Caitriona Cosgrove an equal distance back in 3rd place.

Onto the bike and 4 quickly became 3 as the relentless pace set by Graham, Dennis and O’Reilly resulted in the trio crossing the line in just over 33 minutes for the 20km ride in windy conditions.

In the ladies cycle leg O’Neill demonstrated her class on the bike and took a minute out of Daly to take a lead into run 2. Another fine cyclist, Michelle Doyle passed Cosgrove during the cycle leg for third place. This set up two heroic duels on the final run, one for the overall win and one for 3rd place.

During the ladies final run Daly pulled back the 35 seconds she trailed O’Neill by and Cosgrove caught and left Doyle for third place.

Back to the men and Cian O’Reilly upped the place to sub 3:30/km to clear off and take victory by 34 seconds over Austin Dennis in 56:22. Triathlon Ireland’s Scott Graham came home in 3rd place following a 12:10 run in an overall time of 57:49. The aforementioned Raymond Lonergan maintained good form throughout all legs and held onto his 4th place in just over 1:00 hour.

This event will most likely switch to a single outing in February or March of 2016.

A big thank you on behalf of Kildare Down Syndrome to all the competitors who took part.
