Elite Development Squad Results Triathlon Ireland’s Elite Development Squad have been notching up European Cup races over the past number of weekends, gaining experience racing against some of Europe’s top talent.July 4th saw six Irish athletes racing at the Holten ETU Premium European Cup and Junior European Cup.In the ladies race Susanna Murphy finished best of the Irish in 26th place as her strong swim secured her a place in the leading bike pack. Carolyn Hayes finished in 31st place with a solid run gaining her some places after she missed out of the leading pack out of the water.In the men’s race, Russell While came home in 43rd in a stacked field in a time of 58:05. A solid early season result for the Banbridge man. Cork’s Chris Mintern suffered a DNF during the race after previously finishing 25th at the Istanbul ETU European Cup the week before.The junior race saw Darren Dunne come home in 40th followed by James Walton in 52nd.This weekend a team of six competed in the Chateauroux ETU European Cup which was raced over the Sprint Distance.Darren Dunne was in action again in the junior men’s race and put in a great performance to finish 23rd in a time of 1:00:21. Dunne just missed the lead pack on the bike but produced a 16:59 5 kilometre run to finish.Susanna Murphy finished 14th in the elite women’s race thanks to a strong all round showing. Her 10:06 750 metre swim, 32:15 draft legal 20 kilometre bike ride and 19:06 5 kilometre run saw her finish in an overall time of 1:04:13. The race was won by Germany’s Lisa Sieburger in a time of 1:01:30.Carolyn Hayes finished 22nd of the 39 starters in a time of 1:05:33. Her splits were 10:25 for the 750 metre swim, 33:59 for the 20 kilometre bike and 18:24 for the 5 kilometre run. Laura Tighe came home in a time of 1:07:13 for 28th place with Siobhan Gallagher 35th in 1:13:26 and Laura Wylie suffering a DNF.Chris Mintern and Russell White are set to race next in Spain at the U23 European Championships on July 25th.
