160 Enter Youth National Triathlon Champs

Over 160 young athletes competed from various triathlon clubs from all over Ireland and further afield in the Velocity National Youth Championships hosted by Predator Triathlon Club on Sunday 2nd August at Long Point, Loughrea. This is the 9th time that Predator TC have hosted the event and the largest to date.

The promised rain stayed away and winds were in our favour not that any of the junior triathletes noticed as excitement and energy levels were at an all-time high.

The morning started with the 7-9 year old category with 47 athletes competing. The water was clear and calm as the athletes raced their 100 metre swim to the shore. After a 2 km cycle and 800 metre run, Mathys Bocquet from Predator TC was comfortably the first boy to cross the line and Keela Loomes from Galway TC the first girl home in super style.

Next up were the 10-11 year old category with again 47 juniors racing. After a 200 metre swim, 4 km cycle and 1.5 km run, Olin Murray from Predator TC finished the course in 19:36 to win the boys title. Aoife Dirrane from Predator TC was the first girl home in 19:21.

39 juniors raced in the 12-13 age group. A great swim, bike and run ensured that Sabian Kulcynski from Ennis TC was the first boy home in a superb finish time of 26:11. Ella Doherty was the first girl home after a 300 metre swim, 6 km cycle and 2 km run in a time of 27:42.

The final race was the 14-15 year olds with 29 youths racing. Ben Ryan from Predator TC took the title completing the 400 metre swim, 9 km cycle and 3km run in a fantastic time of 38:44. Leah Connaughton also from Predator Tri won the girls category in a super time of 48:28.

There was great support and excitement from the crowd as the young triathletes went from the lake, to their bikes, out on the run and crossing the finish line. A big well done to everybody who took part especially those competing for the first time. The podium medals were well distributed throughout the various clubs ensuring great competition.

The race was part of the 10th year celebrations of the Loughrea Sprint and inaugural running of the Paratriathlon National Championships.

Predator Triathlon Club would like to thank our main sponsor Velocity Bike Store. Also Glenisk, Hopes Bakery, Donlon’s Fruit & Veg and O’Brien’s. And lastly a huge thank-you to parents, youth triathletes, volunteers, marshals, supporters, council officials, local community, Gardaí, Civil Defence, Triathlon Ireland and all those who assisted in the running of this event. Without their support we would not be in a position to host this hugely successful event.
