Coaching Courses

TRI Leader 

Triathlon Ireland  member (non race licence minimum).
Over 18 years of age.

Duration: 8 hours (9am-5pm).

Modules Covered:

  • Role of the TRI Leader
  • World of Triathlon
  • Health and Safety
  • Assisting a coach in a session
  • Introduction to Junior coaching
  • Safeguarding

Structure of the Day: The day consists of theory and role play modules and aims to be as interactive as possible.

Cost: €60 pp Fee covers:

  • Venue.
  • Tutor fee.
  • Course materials.

TRI Leader Remit: Course content gives TRI Leaders the knowledge and ability to:

  1. Set up a session and assist a coach during a session.
  2. Help run and understand a junior session which was planned by a coach.
  3. Supervise at TI events and sessions.

Junior Coaching module


Level 1 

Triathlon Ireland  member (non race licence minimum).
Over 18 years of age
Completed TRI Leader course

Pre-Course work: Prior to Day 1 of the course, participants are given access to the ITU online learning hub. There is a substantial  amount of pre-course reading and online quiz’s to be completed prior to the course.

Duration: 3 days. One weekend and a Saturday or Sunday 3-4 weeks later. The 3rd day of the course is the assessment day. Participants are assessed while coaching either a Swim, Bike or Run practical session for 10-15 minutes.

  • Coaching Safely
  • Coaching skills
  • Swim/Bike/Run theory
  • Swim/Bike/Run practical
  • Intro to conditioning sessions
  • Session Planning

Structure of the day: See sample time table here. Please note course structures may vary depending on venues and numbers attending.

Cost: €350 pp Fee covers:

  • Tutor fee. This includes tutor support and feedback in the intervening weeks between day 2 and day 3.
  • Pool, room, facility hire.
  • Access to ITU online learning system.
  • Coaching Insurance.

Level 1 remit: The Level 1 coach is qualified and insured to do the following unsupervised:

  • Plan and coach a club session within the ratio guidelines of the ‘Safety Guidelines for Club Sessions’ document in the following scenarios:
    Closed road bike
    Track or enclosed run session.
  • Plan and lead an uncoached club session in the following scenarios:
    Adult open road
    Adult open water swim
  • Plan and lead or coach a junior session in the following scenarios (once safeguarding requirements are complete and ratios adhered to).
    Closed road bike and run

Who are the tutors?

Triathlon Ireland is fortunate to have 9 accredited tutors who will be teaching the Level 1 Coaching Courses. They are Eamonn Tilley, Conor Eannetta, Johanna Tilley-Rock, Denise Murphy, Paddy Mc Laughlin, Oliver Harkin, Barry Smyth, Michael Black and Paul Strange.

TI Coaching Strategy

Coaching is a critically important aspect of the triathlon experience, and we are developing a Coaching Strategy 3 year plan. We are adding to our tutor base so that we can increase the number and frequency of courses run acorss the country. If you are a member of a club and are aware of a specific need & demand for  training in your area please do not hesitate to contact so that we can work with our tutors to provide the necessary training.
